UM Debate plays host in the Ibis High School Debate Tournament

 

The team played host to various high school debate squads throughout the state by resurrecting the high school Ibis Debate Tournament here on campus. A number of schools throughout the state of Florida descended upon Coral Gables to debate the topic of transportation infrastructure investment within the United States. The UM debaters served as judges, ballot runners, as well as tabulation staff to ensure the tournament experience was enjoyed by all those who attended. Kenny McCafferey, coach of the Berkeley Prep team that won the competition and UM alumni said, “This tournament was ran 

better than it’s ever been ran before. And that includes the years that I ran the tournament.”

Team breaks at their first NPDA tournament - Loyola Results

Last weekend, the University of Miami Debate team kicked off its competitive season in Chicago, at the Loyola Rambler tournament. The tournament was a new venture for the debaters as they competed for the first time on the National Parliamentary Debate Association circuit.Various top ranked programs from the Midwest were in attendance including Purdue, Wheaton, McKendree, and the host school Loyola. In the course of three days, the University of Miami competed in thirty rounds of competition represented by three underclassmen teams.

Competing for the University of Miami were varsity members Ryden Butler and Ali Jessani, joined by newcomers Russ Wilde Jr., Joe Karam, Ishtpreet Singh, and international exchange student Jeremy Tan.The students debated topics ranging from space development, intervention in Syria, and the law of the sea treaty and others. Leading the way for the Canes was the novice team of Joe and Russ who were ranked as the sixth seed after the preliminary rounds.

The Debate Team Kicks Off Competition This Weekend at Loyola, Chicago

This weekend the University of Miami debate team will be competing in it's first tournament of the season at the Loyola Rambler Parliamentary Debate Tournament in Chicago. The team will be breaking new ground by competing for the first time in the National Parliamentary Debate Association circuit style of debate. Two returning members will be joined by four new faces on the trip to Chi-town. 

Coming back to the team for the second year, sophomores Ryden Butler and Ali Jessani will be competing in the varsity division along newcomers Jeremy Tan and Ishtpreet Singh. In the novice division, the U will be represented by Joe Karam and Russ Wilde.

Open House for new members!

The team will be holding an open house for all interested members this Friday, August 24th at 3:30 p.m. in WCB 4026 (Wolfson School of Communication). 

Participation on the team is open to all undergraduate students at the University of Miami and no experience is required. If you'd like to join the team, but cannot make it to the Friday meeting, contact Coach Dave Steinberg at Dave@miami.edu.
