Over the weekend, the University of Miami Debate Team came away with a first place finish at the Georgia Tech debate tournament. Leading the way for the Canes, the varsity team of Ali Jessani (Sophomore, School of Communication) and senior Jeremy Tan (Senior, School of Business) finished the tournament with a preliminary record of four wins and one loss, before advancing into the quarterfinal round of competition. Once in elimination rounds, they prevented a close-out by Morehouse College, and eliminated three of their teams before being declared the winners of the tournament. Each of the varsity members were also recognized as the 7th (Ali) & 6th (Jeremy) top speakers of the tournament. Also making waves, the team of Hugo Medrano and Renee Reneau finished as the 4th place team in the novice division of the tournament. As a team, the squad was ranked 2nd overall in the team sweepstakes awards division. In addition to Morehouse College the squad beat out competitors from Georgia Tech, the University of Tennessee, Gainesville State, and Clark Atlantic University for the first place finish.
